What is Unix ? - trademarked as UNIX -- is a multiuser, multitasking operating system (OS) designed for flexibility and adaptability. Originally developed in the 1970s, Unix was one of the first OSes to be written in the C programming language. Since its introduction, the Unix operating system and its offshoots have had a profound effect on the computer and electronics industry, offering portability, stability and interoperability across a range of heterogeneous environments and device types. Simple understand able , you can running your PC , Notebook, Netbook or other computer using Unix and Linux .
Unix come with many variant, such as BSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, HP UX, and etc.
Here are samples of screenshot from Unix FreeBSD that have been installed on my Notebook, I am using Unix FreeBSD release 9.1 on Acer Aspire 5580 Intel core duo.
Using FreeBSD, I can doing same things that when I am using Windows 7, such as browsing using Ephipanny browser, or Firefox, Opera, Konqueror Browser, sending email using thunderbird, using Office programs such as Libre Office Writer , Libre Office Draw, Libre Office Impress, Libre Office Calc, same as Microsoft Office, the different are these are totally Free Software.
I am using X background theme, this background it can change to another theme, there are a lots of themes out there.
Installed Unix FreeBSD on ACER Aspire 5580
On the next experiment, I will installed Linux or Windows as second OS, I have been doing using Installed two OS in one Notebook, within this notebook, Windows XP with Linux Ubuntu, as info, Unix FreeBSD have feature to Install Linux Emulator for running programs under Linux and Adobe Flash Plugin .
